THE ISSUE:

Rh- blood is EXTREMELY rare in the Thai population.* (About 0.3% or less). Because of this, there is rarely ANY of these blood types available in the event of an accident, disease, pregnancy or other need for transfusion. So, If you have ANY of the Rh- blood types (O-, A-,B- or AB-) and you need a simple transfusion, it can mean the difference between life and death.

It means that Rh- blood of any type barely exists here in Thailand and that visiting and resident foreigners are the ONLY source.

f

WHAT CAN I DO?
If you know that you are Rh Negative, Please give blood every 90 days.  If all Rh Negative blood types donated often, we would not have a problem in Thailand. But also give blood if you are not Rh Negative.  All blood types are used, and needed.

INVITE A FRIEND!
Please let your friends know about this issue and encourage them to donate blood.

DONATE WHEN THE CALL GOES OUT!
We ask each of you to imagine an unfortunate situation where it is you, or a loved one that is in the hospital and in desperate need of blood.  What would you want others to do?  That’s right!  Drop everything and donate blood!  Well…. We are asking you to do the same.  Many lives have been lost but for a simple lack of blood.

WHY IS O- BLOOD THE HIGHEST RISK?

O- blood is what’s called the “universal donor”.  Anyone can RECEIVE O- blood, along with at least their own blood type (and possibly others). This means that people with O- blood are at EXTREME risk here in thailand.

O- people can ONLY receive O- blood.  And since any O- blood can also be given to everyone else in an emergency it is almost NEVER banked/available at all. It is used up very quickly.  At last check there was a large NEGATIVE balance of O- blood in the national Thai system.  Because of this, when the call goes out for O- blood it is EXTREMELY important that you respond immediately in the WhatsApp Group and donate as quickly as possible as these people have far fewer people that can help them.

Other Rh- blood facts:

*Rh- blood is extremely rare in most Asian populations.  In China it is called “Panda Blood” because of its rarity.

*Your blood type at home in western countries is usually available when needed.   While Rh- blood types make up only about 15% in the western world;  the system for donating, banking, moving blood from place to place and transfusing blood is well established.

*Donated blood can only be stored for a short period of time (+- 8 weeks) before it expires.  So a constant supply of donations is needed to maintain a minimum level.
